Today during our annual suicide prevention training there was something brought to my attention. There is a complete population of people at risk for death by their own hands that is completely ignored. Everybody knows what to look for in a suicidal person, and more often than not the signs can be very evident. Suicide involves planning, it involves thought and careful precision. What about those people who are not actually suicidal? What about the people who engage in the risky behavior, abuse the drugs, and succumb to their egos? What about the people who die from their depression, their addictions, their impulses? People immediately seek out help for the suicidal but fail to recognize that this other population is toying with the same risk.
We need to look out for the mentally ill. Whether the intention is there or not- the outcome is very much the same.
